A Lesson In Transparency From Medal of Freedom Winner Dolores Huerta & Author Sarah Warren

Being an overnight success is overrated. Before you get your first sentence out, the world wants to know what you’ll be doing next (or the NEXT overnight). Forget that wizard in Oz. Invite visitors to peek behind your curtain.

I’m impressed with author Sarah Warren, whose debut book is Dolores Huerta: A Hero to Immigrant Workers (Amazon Children’s Publishing). The picture book is a great introduction to an overlooked heroine of the civil rights movement.

Best of all, Sarah isn’t shy about telling about the book’s origin. From her website:

Guess how many words are in the story? 660.

Guess how long it took me to write it? 10 years!

Learn from Sarah, whose days are spent as an award-winning Headstart teacher in Minnesota. Don’t feel the need to fit into any creative stereotypes. You are what you are today because of all those yesterdays. Mention the time you’ve taken to get where you are, or on the road you’ve been traveling.

The best story is YOUR story.
