Face it. Not all of us will win the radio quiz show Wait, Wait….Don’t Tell Me! We won’t have famed announcer Carl Kasell recording our answering machine message.
Too many of us mortals have a self-recorded effort saying, “Leave a BRIEF message.”
Why? When I listen, I hear only the B word. To me, it says that no one is THAT interested in my reason for calling. C’mon. Be brief. Get this over with.
Do you really get concise, quality messages from people that way?
Here’s an idea. Instead of campaigning for shorter messages, strive for BETTER messages. Credit “Uncle” John Crawford, a dear friend of my family, for this inspiration. This ornery retired farmer has a voice-mail sounding something like…
“Please, leave a message after the beep. If it’s a good one, we might even call you back.”
Make every word work for you.
