Watch for the rubber bracelets:
What Would Austin Kleon Do? (Or write or say or…)
Ever since I reviewed Steal Like An Artist, I’ve hoped for more Kleonisms.
One gem appeared recently at Newspaper Blackout, the online counterpart to his 2010 poetry book.
A reader asked:
Is it acceptable to publish blackout poems in a literary magazine? I figured it was, but when my adviser asked me I wasn’t sure of the answer.
The answer amazed.
“How the hell should I know? I’ve never published in a literary magazine.
Just type out the words, pretend they were always yours, and send in the manuscript. Ha!”
Say amen, somebody! I haven’t seen such online wisdom in awhile. Words that prompt me to simultaneously laugh, choke and blow hot tea through my nose are worth remembering.
Let’s create now and obey later. Stuffy college professors need to unlock creative doors, not serve as human speed bumps.
I’m itching for Austin’s next book, promised for March. Stay tuned!
